Strong qualifying for Porsche sets up thrilling IMSA finale at Petit Le Mans

Both Porsche Penske Motorsport cars will start this year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season finale at Petit Le Mans inside the top six after a strong qualifying session.

The #7 car, shared by Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy and Laurens Vanthoor, finished Friday’s session in fourth, with a best time of 1m10.241s.

The #6 car followed closely behind with a best time of 1m10.284s in the entry piloted by Matt Campbell, Mathieu Jaminet and Julien Andlauer.

A thrilling battle for championship glory will take place on Saturday, as the #6 car leads the standings by 128 points over its sister car.

The #24 BMW, which is the only car still in contention for the championship, finished qualifying in ninth place.

Porsche also leads the manufacturers' standings ahead of the last of 11 races and has a two-point advantage over second-placed Acura.

Campbell went quickest early on in the 15-minute session with a 1m14.071s, improving by a second on his next run before a 1m11.016s kept him ahead.

The #7 car, with Nasr at the wheel, was sat fourth-fastest with eight minutes remaining, with its best time a 1m16.039s.

Heading into the closing stages, both factory Porsche 963 were close in the running, with just 0.005s separating the two cars, with the #6 ahead.

By the chequered flag, the #7 had improved again to sit fourth, with the #6 car in sixth.

Customer Racing

The #85 JDC-Miller MotorSports car, driven by Max Esterson in his first GTP outing, finished 12th with a time of 1m10.939s.

In the GTD Pro class, AO Racing's Laurin Heinrich put the #77 Rexy car in fifth place on the grid for tomorrow's race, while Adam Adelson for Wright Motorsports will start from 16th place in the GTDs.

The race on the 2025 Road Atlanta will start on Saturday, October 11 at 12:10 local time / 18:10 CEST.
