A strong performance in the Mexico City E-Prix delivered another good points haul for the Porsche Formula E Team, as Jake Dennis narrowly missed out on the podium for Andretti.

Despite a fierce fight until the end, the customer racing driver crossed the line in fifth as the top finishing Porsche 99X Electric in Saturday’s outing - the 150th Formula E race.

The two factory drivers, Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller, were sixth and ninth at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, while sporting a special Carrera Panamericana livery marking 75 years of Porsche Motorsport.

Despite both leading at times, a race interrupted by a safety car and another brief yellow flag bunched up the pack and saw both drivers narrowly miss out.

However, the team still brought home a strong points haul, and is joint-third in the teams’ standings after two rounds.

Season 10 champion Wehrlein is fourth in the standings, while Müller is tied in sixth position.

Andretti driver Felipe Drugovich finished the race 15th, while Cupra Kiro’s Pepe Martí salvaged a last-place start to finish seventh. Dan Ticktum was taken out after suffering contact in another driver’s incident.

Story of the race

Müller qualified in fifth for the factory team, with Wehrlein in 11th after a tricky qualifying session.

Müller got a good start and was up into third early on, while Wehrlein also made up a position further back.

On lap four, Wehrlein took his first four minutes of Attack Mode, and immediately made progress to run sixth after Turn 6.

Up ahead, Müller took second on the run to Turn 1 on lap five, with Wehrlein closing in behind to pass his team-mate before the stadium section and then take the lead in the final sector.

Unfortunately, he lost positions soon after, and was down to third behind Müller after the first 10 laps in a bid to conserve energy.

By lap 15, Müller, who had held second place, made it back through on Mahindra driver Edoardo Mortara for the lead on the run down to Turn 9, while Wehrlein held off Dennis for fourth.

The full course yellow was deployed on lap 18 after Nyck de Vries (Mahindra) came to a stop at Turn 1, with the safety car coming out two laps later.

Müller led the field away on lap 22, before another brief yellow for an incident at Turn 6 soon after.

He ran wide at the same place on lap 28 to fall to second, before taking his first Attack Mode boost.

Müller continued to battle for the podium positions, running in fourth until he took his second Attack Mode on lap 33, though the whole top 10 had taken the same strategy.

Despite battling until the end, he slipped to ninth, while Wehrlein, who had also taken his final Attack Mode at the same time, fought to cross the line in sixth.

Customer racing

Dennis started in seventh, but immediately made up two places to run fifth in the early stages.

By lap 10, he had conserved energy well and had the highest percentage remaining of any driver, allowing him to stay in the fight.

He was running fifth on the safety car restart before taking the first of his Attack Modes on lap 28 - a good strategy which allowed him to battle into the podium places.

Though he suffered contact fighting at Turn 3 in a fierce fight for third place, he was able to continue battling.

Despite running low on energy in the closing stages, Dennis finished in fifth to continue a strong start to Season 12.

Team-mate Felipe Drugovich lined up in 15th, and though he closed in on the points-paying positions during the action, went on to finish where he started.

Pepe Martí started at the back of the grid for Cupra Kiro due to a penalty from the previous round, before being handed a further grid drop for changing his inverter, MGU and gearbox.

This was converted into a 10-second stop-and-go penalty during the race.

However, the rookie put in a brilliant performance to fight back to finish seventh and score his first Formula E points.

Dan Ticktum lined up sixth, and was fighting for a podium position before contact from the Turn 6 incident took him out of the race.

Coming next

Formula E returns for another round of thrilling action in just three weeks, with the championship heading to Miami for the third outing of Season 12.

The race will be held at the Miami International Autodrome on January 31, marking a new venue on the calendar.

The championship previously raced at Miami-Homestead Speedway, but will now take in the twists and turns of the Hard Rock Stadium and surrounding circuit which Formula 1 uses.

Having played host to the Evo Sessions in 2025, the new venue is sure to be another exciting addition to the Formula E calendar.
