The season opener of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany started with a bang for Theo Oeverhaus. The 21-year-old from Osnabrück, who drives for Team ID Racing, comes to the race weekend (24 to 26 April) at the Red Bull Ring with two Imola victories under his belt. After the first stop in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the Carrera Cup in Spielberg will be part of the DTM supporting programme for the first time this year. In the championship races three and four, 31 drivers from 13 nations will compete against each other in the new Porsche 911 Cup.
After a one-hour free practice session (12:35-13:35) on Friday, the participants will take part in qualifying in the evening (18:10-18:45). Qualifying is divided into two sessions, each with twelve minutes of driving time and a 10-minute break. The fastest lap time in the first part of qualifying determines the starting grid for Saturday's race, while the fastest time in the second section defines the order for Sunday's race. Whether Oeverhaus can secure pole position twice, as he did in Imola, remains to be seen, as the competition is fierce. Both Alexander Tauscher (Target) from Bavaria and South African Keagan Masters (Proton Competition), who are currently joint second in the overall standings, attracted attention with two podium finishes.
Rookie Sam Jongejan (NL/Team75 Bernhard) also wants to build on his good form in the 520-hp Porsche 911 Cup. The Dutchman leads the rookie standings after the Imola season opener. 20-year-old Caleb Sumich (Target) brings Austrian flair to Spielberg. The Australian-born rider currently lives in Salzburg.
"After an exciting start in Imola, the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany is now entering the next round at the Red Bull Ring. The circuit with its unique hill-and-valley characteristics presents drivers and teams with special challenges. At the same time, the new 520-hp Porsche 911 Cup celebrates its premiere on the DTM platform. We are also expecting two spectacular races and thrilling duels in front of a fantastic Alpine backdrop in Austria," says Thorsten Rückert, Project Manager Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany.
With its combination of long straights and fast bends, the Austrian circuit is perfectly embedded in the Styrian mountain landscape. The 4.326-kilometre Formula 1 race track has large differences in altitude with gradients of up to twelve per cent.
