Fresh from a nine-win Porsche Carrera Cup North America title campaign, Porsche Motorsport North America Junior Tyler Maxson heads to Europe this month to chase one of the most coveted seats in sports car racing.

Tyler Maxson will carry North America's hopes into the global Porsche Junior Shoot-Out, where 12 drivers nominated from Porsche Carrera Cup championships around the world will compete to become the 2027 Porsche Junior.

The TOPP Racing driver arrives on the back of a dominant season, having secured the Carrera Cup North America Mobil Pro title with nine victories before receiving the newly redesigned Al Holbert Cup at the Celebration of Champions in Austin.

Attention now turns to the intense five-day November 11–15 assessment with Porsche on the global stage that will test drivers both on and off track.

"It's a pretty proven commodity," Maxson said. "If you win the Shoot-Out, everybody has gone on to have very successful careers."

A goal from the start.

When Maxson first stepped into the new Porsche 911 Cup car at the start of 2026, the Shoot-Out was firmly in his sights, even if a nomination still felt some distance away.

"It was always the goal to do well in this series and hopefully go on to the Shoot-Out," Maxson said. "I don't think I fully expected to do it the way we did this year, and I don't think I fully expected to be nominated.

"It's been a great year, and I'm just super honored to represent Porsche Motorsport North America in the Shoot-Out."

The process begins at the Porsche Esports Performance Center in Cologne, Germany, where drivers will complete a simulator assessment alongside media interviews and medical and mental checks.

From there, the field travels to Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal, for on-track trials in the Porsche 911 Cup (Type 992.2). Following a race-weekend format, the drivers will complete two free practice sessions before qualifying and a race, with the field whittled down until one driver is selected.

Preparing for the unkown.

Maxson has never driven at Portimão, and the Shoot-Out will also put him on unfamiliar tires. To reduce those unknowns, he recently completed a test on Michelin rubber and has spent the days leading into the event building circuit knowledge in the simulator.

The arrival of the Porsche 911 Cup (Type 992.2), with ABS now standard in every Carrera Cup, removes one variable that previous North American representatives had to confront.

"I think it levels the playing field a lot," Maxson said. "At least we have it all on the same base platform. The tire difference would be the only thing now, and the track. It'll be a new track for me."

Simulator work is already part of Maxson's routine, particularly at venues where Carrera Cup North America has no pre-event testing.

"It's huge, especially in a case like going over there where I don't know the track," he said. "We can get a lot of laps in and really figure out the braking points and the general quirks of the track before we ever get there."

Learning from those who have been there.

Maxson's preparation has also drawn on the experience around him. As a Porsche Motorsport North America Junior, he has worked throughout the season with mentor Richard Westbrook, who joined him for a simulator session focused on Portimão in the build-up to the Shoot-Out.

"A guy like that, with the level of experience and the knowledge that he has, is absolutely invaluable," Maxson said. "Especially with the Shoot-Out, his track knowledge of Portimão, the help he was able to give and the insights into what they might be looking for."

At the Celebration of Champions, Maxson also took the opportunity to speak with Callum Hedge, who previously represented Porsche Carrera Cup Australia at the Shoot-Out.

"Everybody that I've talked to has been extremely helpful," he said. "That kind of knowledge is invaluable, because at the end of the day there are only 12 people that go to the Shoot-Out every year. There's a very limited number that have been, period."

Credit to TOPP Racing.

Maxson's nomination also reflects the rise of TOPP Racing. Over the past two season’s Todd Oppermann's Texas-based team has become a front-running force in the Pro field, securing back-to-back Team Championships in 2025 and 2026.

"I cannot say enough good things about the program that Todd and the whole TOPP Racing team run," Maxson said. "Those guys work insanely hard. I'm super grateful for the opportunity they gave me, because I would not have been able to do Carrera Cup if it wasn't for them and for David Baker. It would have never been a possibility for me.

"It's really cool to see them transform the team to really being a force at the front of the Pro field week in, week out."

One day at a time.

The 2027 Porsche Junior will follow in the footsteps of names including Porsche legends Timo Bernhard, Marc Lieb and Patrick Long as well as recent winners Julien Andlauer, Ayhancan Güven and Laurin Heinrich. The winner will be announced at the Porsche Motorsport Night of Champions in Weissach on December 5.

For Maxson, whose championship prize package already includes an invitation to that event, the focus remains firmly on the task in front of him.

"I'm just going to take it day by day,” he said. “Hopefully it all goes well and I can come out on top, but I'm sure the other 11 juniors are holding the same hopes.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I'm definitely optimistic."

The five-day Porsche Junior Shoot-Out will test Maxson and 11 fellow Carrera Cup nominees through simulator work, off-track assessments and on-track competition in the Porsche 911 Cup (Type 992.2) at Portimão. One driver will ultimately earn the coveted 2027 Porsche Junior role, with the winner revealed at the global Porsche Motorsport Night of Champions in Weissach on December 5.
