Welcome to Porsche Motorsport in Australia – a world of competition, down under
A LONG history of Porsche competition and success in Australia is continued today by Porsche Australia, the promoter of two of the strongest one-make racing series in the Asia-Pacific region; Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia and the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia.
Porsche’s heritage in Australia dates back to the 1950s, where the country was just the second outside of Europe – after North America – to become a Porsche market. Naturally, motorsport followed soon after.
After years of competition in local Touring Car and Endurance racing, and early versions of Porsche Cup competition and GT racing, in 2003 one-make racing arrived in Australia – and it’s never looked back.
Porsche Carrera Cup Australia
FOUNDED in 2003, the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia is not only the nations top one-make category, but also regarded as one of the most professional and deeply competitive championships in Australia.
The championship features eight rounds, supporting some of Australia’s largest motorsport events in the Repco Supercars Championship calendar and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Carrera Cup Australia has also competed in New Zealand and in Asia, alongside Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.
PCCA features the Porsche GT3 Cup (Type 992) Cars, competing in a level playing field and split in two classes; The Equity-One Professional class and Pro-Am, for semi-professional racers.
Fields average more than 25 cars across the season with the competitors a mixture of up-and-coming young stars, more established fully professional drivers still at the top of their game and the Pro-Am runners who are just as passionate and competitive as their young stars.
With a host of professional teams preparing entries, the championship has full support from Porsche Cars Australia, including a teams / corporate facility at each event and spare parts and technical assistance at each round.
Champions of Carrera Cup Australia include the legendary Jim Richards, former factory driver Alex Davidson, current Supercars stars including David Reynolds and Jaxon Evans, and current Porsche Penske Motorsport factory pilot, Matt Campbell.
Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia
PORSCHE MICHELIN SPRINT CHALLENGE Australia (PSCA), founded in 2008 as GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, has evolved to become a premiere development category for both young and more established drivers alike.
Currently utilising the Type 991.2 and 991 Porsche GT3 Cup Cars, the category provides a stepping stone between junior sedan and open wheel categories to Porsche Carrera Cup – or other key GT categories in the region or further abroad.
PSCA competes six times each year in a national calendar that features a mixture of Supercars Championship events and those supporting the SRO-run SpeedSeries, including GT World Challenge Australia.
Competition is tight and highly competitive with top runners in both Pro and Pro-Am often stepping up the following season to the top level in Carrera Cup Australia.
At the same time, Sprint Challenge still caters to the more amateur racer, who simply seeks the enjoyment of competing at a high level in the ultimate one-make racer.
