Looking ahead: July Porsche motorsport preview

The motorsport calendar continues in July, with Formula E hosting its finale, while other series continue past the midway point.

Having held its blue riband race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, the FIA World Endurance Championship heads to Brazil for its fifth round of the year, the 6 Hours of São Paulo, on July 14.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship hosts the Grand Prix of Canada on the same day, though no Porsche Penske Motorsport cars will compete in the GT-only round.

Formula E will head to London for its double-header finale on July 20-21, with the championship set to reach a thrilling conclusion.

The DTM will head to the Norisring in Nuremberg from July 5-7, as the Esports calendar continues with the next ESL R1 race at Spa.

Here’s a full preview of all the Porsche motorsport activities taking place in July:

WEC: 6 Hours of São Paulo

The fifth round of the FIA WEC takes place from July 12-14, with the championship heading to Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Interlagos. The series has previously raced at the circuit three times - in 2012, 2013 and 2014 - and it makes its return to the calendar for the 2024 season.

The anti-clockwise layout featuring 15 corners is 4.309 km (2.677 miles) long, and has run in its current iteration since 1999.

The WEC title fight is hotting up, with just 12 points separating the top three manufacturers in the overall Hypercar standings. Porsche Penske Motorsport leads the way on 108 points, with Ferrari on 99 and Toyota third on 96.

The #6 crew of Kévin Estre, André Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor also leads the drivers’ standings on 99 points each, ahead of the #50 Ferrari and the #7 Toyota.

The #5 drivers - Matt Campbell, Michael Christensen and Frédéric Makowiecki - are fifth in the standings.

Three rounds remain after Brazil: The Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of the Americas on September 1, the 6 Hours of Fuji on September 15 and the season finale 8 Hours of Bahrain on November 2.

Formula E: London E-Prix double header

The Formula E season reaches its finale in London, with a double header on July 20-21.

After 14 rounds, the champion will finally be decided in tow hotly contested races at ExCeL London. The track weaves its way inside and outside of the venue and around the Royal Docklands.

Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa will round off their seasons in the Porsche 99X Electric, with Wehrlein still in title contention in the closing stages of the championship.

DTM: Norisring

The DTM heads to the Norisring for its fourth round of eight from July 5-7. The track, in Nuremberg, is a street circuit with a long tradition, and the current, 2.2 kilometre long track has been in use since 1972.

Defending champion Thomas Preining continued his title defence last time out in Zandvoort with Manthey Racing, scoring eight points amid a challenging weekend. The previous round at the Lausitzring saw him take his first win of the season, which he also followed up with a second win.

He is now just 19 points behind the leader at the halfway point, with plenty more opportunities to score points and repeat victories.

Preining has taken wins at the Bavarian circuit for the past two years, and hopes to replicate that success this time out.

Team-mate Ayhancan Güven experienced a weekend without points in the Netherlands despite a strong driving performance, with two retirements due to tyre damage. He hopes to bounce back this time out.

Esports: Spa

July marks the final round of the drivers’ championship races in this season of ESL R1. The first round took place at Hockenheim on June 21, with the second round at Atlanta on June 28.

The first round, at Hockenheim, saw Joshua Rogers take his 32nd victory in the 200th ESL R1 race, and he now ranks second in the standings after the first of three races. Charlie Collins also made it into the top twelve, with a total of four digital Porsche 911 GT3 R taking part in the final.

Collins also sits inside the top 10 of the standings with two rounds remaining.

After all three rounds of the online qualifiers stage of the teams’ championship, Porsche Coanda Esports Racing Team finished an impressive third out of 12 teams. The points standings will be reset once the competition progresses to the in-person finals held in Riyadh in August.
