The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team took a superb double podium finish in Mexico City to lead the teams’ standings after round two, with António Félix da Costa leading the drivers' title race.

The Portuguese driver scored a fantastic second-place finish in Saturday’s thrilling race, kicking off 2025’s racing action with a bang.

His reigning world champion team-mate Pascal Wehrlein put his frightening crash in last month's São Paulo season-opener firmly behind him with third place, having also taken pole position in an all-Porsche 99X Electric front row.

Porsche's GEN3 Evo car controlled much of the race between both the factory team drivers and customer squad Andretti pair Jake Dennis and Nico Müller.

The team looked set for victory before the timing of a final safety car period allowed Nissan Formula E Team driver Oliver Rowland an opportunity to sneak ahead.

Story of the race

The pace of the Porsche 99X Electric around the Formula E version of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was emphatically demonstrated during qualifying - Wehrlein topping group A and da Costa a close third in group B.

They made smooth progress through the quarter and semi-finals to end up facing each other in the final duel, where Wehrlein's 1m10.984s lap gave him a record fourth Formula E pole position at the Mexican track.

Wehrlein and da Costa maintained their first and second positions at the start, resisting pressure from Rowland and DS Penske driver Jean-Eric Vergne in the opening third of the 36-lap race.

Across the next eight laps, most of the leaders all took their mandatory two visits to the attack mode zone that triggers the temporary availability of extra power and all-wheel-drive.

Doing so early set Dennis up to get involved in Wehrlein and da Costa's lead fight, but it was the factory Porsche pair that emerged ahead by the time all three were back to their usual power level, with da Costa now leading from Wehrlein.

There was a final twist, though, as the field was bunched together by two late safety car periods. Rowland had left his second attack mode later than most, which meant he still had the performance boost when the race resumed after the final safety car and was able to move into first place.

Da Costa then chased Rowland all the way to the finish, crossing the line just 0.4 seconds behind and moving into a 12-point drivers' championship lead as a result.

His second place and Wehrlein's third jumped the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team from third to first in the teams' standings.

Customer racing

The Andretti team also showcased the potential of the Porsche 99X Electric, with Dennis and team-mate Müller's progress from seventh and 11th on the grid respectively to join the podium fight.

Müller's early move to the attack mode zone allowed him to make rapid progress into the top five, and once there he tactically made space for Dennis just ahead to take attack mode without losing any positions.

Dennis surged to second place and then battled past Wehrlein in the stadium section to briefly lead before da Costa used attack mode to overtake both.

They swapped places again during the second attack mode deployment, with da Costa and Wehrlein managing to pass Dennis this time and setting up a Porsche powertrain 1-2-3 until the safety car created Rowland's opportunity.

Though Müller's early attack mode uses left him vulnerable to those who had the additional power later on, he still scored points in ninth place.

Porsche's new second customer team Cupra Kiro showed promise too, with David Beckmann in contention for a points finish before a collision with Zane Maloney ended his race and triggered the first safety car period.

His team-mate Dan Ticktum was tapped into a race-wrecking spin on the first lap and finished 19th.

New venue next

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship now heads to a new venue, as it makes its first visit to Formula 1's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix home Jeddah and a modified version of the ultra-fast and challenging street track.

That event takes place in just over a month, on February 14-15, with the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and its drivers the ones to beat when the season resumes.
